HOW HR 9495 OPENS THE DOOR TO FULL AUTHORITARIAN FUCKERY
A chilling look at how HR 9495 (just passed in the House) enables full-throated authoritarianism, empowering Trump-picked officials to target nonprofits as 'terrorists'. AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
REMEMBER THAT SCENE IN STAR WARS where Padmé watches democracy die “with thunderous applause”? Yeah, well, we just had our own mini-version of that, minus the applause — unless you count the gleeful hand-rubbing of wannabe autocrats.
In a move that absolutely nobody with two functioning brain cells should support, the House just passed HR 9495, affectionately known as the *Dictator’s Little Helper* bill.
With a 219-184 vote, we’re now one step closer to letting the Treasury Secretary — you know, whoever Trump picks for his next round of governmental demolition derby — unilaterally label any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization” and kill their tax-exempt status faster than you can say witch hunt.
But here’s where the real fuckery comes in: 15 Democrats (below) actually voted FOR this monstrosity. Yes, you read that right. While watching Trump announce cabinet picks that make his 2016 lineup look like a gathering of constitutional scholars, these Democrats thought, “Yeah, let’s totes give this guy MORE power to target his enemies.”
Remember how this bill started? It was supposedly about stopping funding for terrorist groups (something that’s already illegal, by the way). But much like how “I’m just going to check IG for five minutes” turns into a three-hour doom-scrolling session, this bill morphed into a potential weapon of mass democracy destruction.
While most Democrats finally got their act together and opposed this travesty, 15 of these fuckers still couldn’t resist the urge to play into the hands of potential autocracy. It’s like they’re standing in front of a burning building, holding a gas can, wondering why everyone’s looking at them funny.
The bill’s supporters, including Representative Jason Smith (R-Mo.), had the audacity to blame ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ for the Democratic opposition. Because apparently, being concerned about giving unilateral powers to a guy who’s been openly fantasizing about retribution is just us being paranoid.
Here’s the thing: we’re watching the same playbook that’s been used in places like Hungary, Russia, and Nicaragua. It’s Authoritarianism 101, and we’re sitting here letting it happen like it’s a Netflix series we can just turn off in the future when it gets too scary.
Yes, we can turn it off — but not in the future. That time is fucking now.
What you need to do:
Call your Senators — this fight isn’t over until it hits the Senate floor
Spread the word about what this bill actually means (Hint: It’s not about terrorism, it’s about power)
Support organizations fighting against this kind of legislative overreach
The road to authoritarianism is paved with bills like HR 9495 — seemingly *reasonable* on the surface but deadly to democracy when you peek under the hood. It’s time to make some noise before we can’t make noise anymore.
Because if we don’t stop this now, we might find ourselves in a country where disagreeing with the government makes you a ‘terrorist’ faster than you can say “But her emails.”
I actually recorded that scene from Star Wars and meant to post it after Netanyahu visited Congress… I’m constantly comparing Star Wars to our world!
Tax exempt status is a privilege bestowed on organizations on behalf of the American tax payer so it seems that the goal of the recipient organization should align with the sensibilities of their benefactors.
