THE ACTUAL INVASION IS IN THE BOARDROOM
$88 billion to terrorize human beings. $0 to tax billionaires. Deportation and dehumanization will NEVER fix what capitalism broke.
DID YOU KNOW that in countries like Switzerland and Norway, they tax their billionaires at 2%?
This gets them:
Free healthcare for everyone
Free education through university
Paid family leave
Working public transit.
Did you know that if we did that here, a 2% wealth tax would generate:
$7.4 billion from Elon Musk ($369 billion net worth)
$4.9 billion from Mark Zuckerberg ($245 billion net worth)
$4.7 billion from Jeff Bezos ($234 billion net worth)
$4.0 billion from Larry Ellison ($200 billion net worth)
$3.5 billion from Bill Gates ($177 billion net worth)
Just from these five men (based on figures from Bloomberg on June 11, 2025) that equates to $24.5 billion annually.
And from the top 20 billionaires? More than $60 billion every single year.
USD 60,000,000,000.
So, that’s enough for school lunches for every kid in America.
Or insulin for every diabetic.
Or housing for every homeless veteran.
Or universal pre-K.
Yet instead of this — what do you call it again? Ah yes, common sense — we’re spending $88 billion annually to deport people who pay 25-35% of their wages in taxes and blowing $315 billion on mass deportation while billionaires pay less than 0.5% of their wealth. Folks, this isn’t “economics” (whatever the fuck that means). It’s racism dressed up as policy.
Can we all talk about how the real issue isn’t immigrants teaching our kids calculus or running our local pharmacy? It’s the fuckers hoarding the wealth while the rest of us fight over scraps.
I’m writing this as an immigrant who’s been navigating the USCIS system for many, many years, and let me tell you something about that particular circle of hell. These people do not fuck around. The system is intimidating by design. Every form costs hundreds of dollars. Every mistake means starting over. Every officer has the power to upend your entire life with one bad day. You learn to triple-check every document, to save every receipt, to document your entire existence just in case someone demands proof that you deserve to exist here.
But here’s the plot twist — they make mistakes all the time. Constant, life-destroying mistakes. But when THEY fuck up, YOU pay the price. I've seen Ph.D.s denied for being *unqualified*. I’ve seen people with every document filled in just-so and every requirement met, get denied for no reason anyone can explain (hi, it me!). Whether you can “legally” be here on paper doesn’t matter when some officer had a bad morning or the system glitches or they just decide today’s the day to ruin your life. From my experience of navigating this bullshit for more than 15 years the message is ALWAYS clear: You’re here on sufferance. Be grateful. Be quiet. Be perfect. Yet also, even perfection won’t save you.
Very important to note here: I’m also navigating this nightmare with every privilege imaginable. I’m white. I speak English. I’m Australian — i.e., one of the “good immigrant countries”. I’ve been paying U.S. taxes (as well as taxes in other nations) since 2009, when I started living with an American abroad. Still, I’ve had applications denied, then approved, then revoked with zero explanation. I’ve had things approved AND denied simultaneously. I’ve waited years for decisions that should take months. And if it’s this hard for me? Imagine what it’s like for someone from Honduras or Nigeria or Bangladesh.
This is all by design. We all get that. America wants to keep immigrants out and the rich in. Message received. This place? It’s not a country — it’s a corporation. And like any corporation, it’s designed to maximize profit for shareholders, not wellbeing for workers.
But here’s the American hypocrisy in all its glory: The system doesn’t just hate immigrants. It needs us. It needs people desperate enough to work for less, scared enough to not complain, vulnerable enough to exploit. The same billionaires and corporations funding anti-immigrant propaganda are the ones profiting from undocumented labor. The same politicians screaming about “invasion” are the ones whose donors rely on workers too terrified to organize.
This isn’t complicated. It’s capitalism 101: Create the crisis, profit from the crisis, blame the victims of the crisis. Classic American fuckery.
Every single economic problem we peasants are currently facing – the rent that eats 60% of our paycheck, the job that hasn’t given us a raise in five years, the medical bill that’s forcing us to choose between insulin and groceries — none of that was caused by immigration.
Zero fucking percent.
Yep, that’s all capitalism, baby. That’s all wealth hoarding. That’s all oligarchy in action.
For argument’s sake, sure, we could deport every single *undocumented* person tomorrow — which would be a moral fucking atrocity that would destroy millions of lives — but as I said, for argument’s sake, okay. Let’s say we do. And then what? What would happen to our economic situation?
That’s right: Absolutely fuck all.
Our rent would still be too high because private equity firms would still own half the bloody housing stock. Our wages would still be stagnant because our CEOs would still be making 400 times what we make. And our healthcare would still bankrupt us because insurance companies would still be writing the laws.
Actually, scratch that — it would get worse. Because those *undocumented* workers? They’re not just paying taxes — they’re propping up entire industries; paying into Social Security they’ll never collect; keeping food prices from skyrocketing. They’re doing the jobs that — let’s be fucking honest — most Americans feel are beneath them (white supremacy), won’t pay living wages for (capitalism), and expect women to do for free anyway (patriarchy). Instead let’s just deport them all, they cried, and simultaneously watch our grocery bills double as we discover freedom tastes like $20 apples.
But instead of going after the people actually stealing from us — the billionaires who pay less in taxes than their secretaries, the corporations that got PPP loans forgiven while your student debt compounds, the executives who lay off thousands while giving themselves bonuses — we’re terrorizing the people who perform our surgeries, harvest our food, care for our elders, debug our software, and build our homes.
Right on, Freedom.
The cruelty isn’t just the point; it’s the distraction. While we’re screaming at each other about border walls at Thanksgiving dinner, they’re quietly building higher walls around their wealth. While your uncle’s Facebook feed is melting down about “caravans”, they’re shipping your cousin’s factory job to whatever country will accept $2 an hour. While we’re losing friendships over who’s “cutting in line”, they’re cutting in front of every social contract that kept our parents’ generation afloat – pensions, unions, the radical idea that one job should pay for one life.
“But what about the billionaires who give to charity? What about the ones who signed that giving pledge?” Janice cried. Okay, so thanks Janice, but also let me stop you right there. Can we all be clear on the fact that billionaire philanthropy is primarily just reputation laundering with tax benefits? Sure, they’ll donate a wing to the hospital, but also let’s be clear: you def can’t afford treatment there. Yep, they’ll also fund that fancy museum, but you’ll never have time to visit because you’re working three jobs. Oh, and they’ll totally give away millions in promo nonsense while hoarding billions, creating foundations that — surprise! — they control, deciding which of us deserves crumbs from their table. It’s not generosity; it’s PR. And it’s definitely not a substitute for paying their fucking taxes.
The dehumanization machine works overtime to make ALL this misdirection possible. It starts with language — “illegals” instead of people, “invasion” instead of migration, “infestation” instead of families seeking safety. Then it moves to policy — detention centers that would make Dickens weep, family separations that traumatize generations, raids that turn workplaces into war zones.
They’ve got us so bloody focused on the fake invasion that we’re missing the real one — you know, like billionaires buying up entire neighborhoods, corporations writing legislation, hedge funds turning housing into casino chips, private equity destroying local businesses. But sure, let’s panic about the guy who works at our dentist, or picks our strawberries.
Scapegoating immigrants isn’t new — in fact, it’s one of the oldest trick in the oligarch playbook. Economy tanking? Better blame immigrants. Wages falling? Must be ‘dem pesky immigrants at it again. Can’t afford college? Guys, it’s totes the immigrants. It’s the same tired song every generation, just with updated lyrics and weird-AF synthesized bass lines. Irish, Chinese, Italian, Mexican — the targets change but the con remains the same: Make the working class fight each other so they don’t notice who’s actually picking their pockets.
And why does it keep working? Well, because fear is profitable.
Fear keeps wages low.
Fear prevents organizing.
Fear divides communities that should be united against their actual oppressors.
Yet here’s what they really don’t want us to figure out . . . immigration isn’t breaking the system; immigration IS the system. Create desperate workers, blame them for said desperation, profit from both the exploitation, and then add a healthy sprinkling of scapegoating. Voila! You’ve got yourself the American Dream — just not yours.
If collectively we want to be serious in talking about who or what is dEsTrOyInG aMeRiCa, then let’s start with some honesty: Unless you’re Indigenous or descended from enslaved peoples, your family came here as immigrants to Turtle Island too.
So now that we’ve established almost all of us are living on stolen land with an immigration story, let’s talk about who's actually fucking us over today: The billionaires hoarding more wealth than entire countries while our bridges collapse and our schools crumble. The CEOs who ship millions of jobs overseas, take billions in government handouts, then buy back their own stock. The hedge fund managers who turned homes into poker chips, pricing out entire generations. The politicians who auction our democracy to whoever cuts the biggest check.
Those are your destroyers. Not your kid’s teacher from Guatemala. Not the surgeon who saved your mom's life. Not the scientist working on your cancer drugs.
Because here’s the truth: No amount of deportations will fix what capitalism has fundamentally broken. Deporting the guy who bags our groceries won’t lower our rent. Destroying the nurse’s life won’t fix our medical debt. We can’t solve systemic exploitation by targeting its most exploited victims. We can’t repair a rigged system by hurting the people getting crushed by the same gears crushing us all.
Fellow peasants, the call is coming from inside the house — and the house is a goddamn mansion in the Hamptons.
COMMUNITY IS A VERB.
How to help immigrants RIGHT NOW:
If ICE comes knocking? Shut the fuck up. You didn’t see anything. You don’t know anything. You can’t help.
Document everything — badges, times, locations. Record what you witness.
Be the friend who shows up. Drive to appointments, translate docs, watch kids. Be someone’s lifeline when the system fails them.
Know your rights and make sure everyone else does too — screenshot, share, repeat. Constitutional protections *should* apply to everyone. They’re being trampled, but knowing them is still power. Make them work for every violation.
Where your money helps:

From an old, comfortably middle class white male (there are more of us in the movement than people realize): Your clarity is bracing, like that first breath of fresh air when stepping outside on a chilly morning. But you know what really makes those oligarchs/fascists lose their shit? It’s a woman who won’t keep her mouth shut. So be safe, and never give up.
Fantastic article, Jo. Definitely restacking it, and will share it widely. Keep up the terrific work: you're the real deal!
